CRNA Telehealth & Remote Opportunities
Not every CRNA career happens in the OR. Remote roles — from telehealth pre-ops to expert witness work at $500/hr — are growing fast. Whether you're burned out, injured, semi-retired, or just want schedule flexibility, here's what's available.
Pre-Operative Assessment (Telehealth)
Conducting pre-anesthetic evaluations via video for ASCs and hospitals. Review medical history, medications, airway assessment (limited remotely), and clear patients for surgery.
Requirements: Active CRNA license in the patient's state. Comfortable with video platforms. Strong documentation skills. 2+ years clinical experience preferred.
Chronic Pain Management (Telehealth)
Follow-up visits for established pain patients. Medication management, treatment plan adjustments, patient education. Requires FPA state for independent prescribing.
Requirements: Pain management experience. DEA registration. Full practice authority state (for independent prescribing). Comfort with chronic opioid management guidelines.
Chart Review / Quality Assurance
Reviewing anesthesia records for quality metrics, compliance, billing accuracy, and adverse event identification. Often contracted by hospitals, insurance companies, or legal firms.
Requirements: Extensive clinical experience (5+ years). Detail-oriented documentation review. Knowledge of billing codes and compliance standards.
Medical-Legal Expert Witness
Reviewing malpractice cases involving anesthesia. Providing written opinions, depositions (video), and occasionally courtroom testimony. Primarily remote work with occasional travel.
Requirements: 10+ years clinical experience. No active malpractice claims. Strong written and verbal communication. Willingness to testify under oath. Thick skin.
Utilization Review
Reviewing insurance claims and prior authorizations for anesthesia services. Determining medical necessity and appropriate level of care.
Requirements: Active CRNA license. Knowledge of CPT/ICD coding for anesthesia. Often contracted through insurance companies or UR firms.
SRNA Clinical Education (Remote/Hybrid)
Teaching didactic courses, simulation debriefing, or clinical coordination for CRNA programs. Many programs added remote teaching capacity post-COVID.
Requirements: DNP/DNAP preferred for faculty roles. Teaching experience or willingness to develop. Some programs require physical presence for simulation labs.
Healthcare Consulting
Advising hospitals, ASCs, and anesthesia groups on staffing models, quality programs, efficiency improvements, compliance, and practice setup.
Requirements: Significant leadership or administrative experience. Business acumen. Strong network in the anesthesia community. Often former chiefs or department leaders.
Medical Writing & Content Creation
Writing CE content, textbook chapters, clinical guidelines, marketing content for medical device companies, or educational materials for CRNA programs.
Requirements: Strong writing skills. Clinical credibility. Published work helpful but not required. Growing demand from CE platforms, device companies, and healthcare media.
