How much do CRNAs make in 2026?

The average CRNA salary in 2026 is $270,000+, with significant variation by state, practice setting, and experience. Top-paying states (CA, WA, MT) exceed $300K. 1099 CRNAs earning $100-$150/hour can gross $350K+. Use our salary calculator for state-specific data filtered by your experience and setting.

What is full practice authority for CRNAs?

Full practice authority means CRNAs can practice without physician supervision or collaborative agreement. As of 2026, 25+ states grant full practice authority. In these states, CRNAs can independently manage anesthesia care, prescribe medications, and bill directly — without a physician signing off. This doesn't mean CRNAs work alone; it means the legal framework doesn't require a supervising physician.

Should I work W2 or 1099 as a CRNA?

It depends on your risk tolerance, family situation, and willingness to manage a business. 1099 CRNAs typically gross 30-50% more but must cover their own health insurance (~$25K/yr for family), malpractice, retirement contributions, and self-employment tax (15.3%). With S-Corp election, the tax savings can be $15-25K/yr. Our calculator does a true apples-to-apples comparison factoring everything in.

What should I look for in a CRNA contract?

The 5 most important clauses: (1) non-compete radius and duration, (2) tail coverage for claims-made malpractice, (3) signing bonus clawback structure, (4) call frequency and compensation terms, and (5) termination notice symmetry. Our guide covers 15 red flags with severity ratings and negotiation strategies for each.

Is my call pay fair?

Beeper/home call typically pays $3-$8/hr standby with $75-$150/hr callback rate. In-house call pays $50-$120/hr. If your effective hourly rate during call drops below $10/hr, you're being underpaid. Our calculator compares your specific call structure against market benchmarks.

Education & CPC

How many CPC credits do I need?

100 credits per 4-year cycle: 60 Class A (core anesthesia) + 40 Class B (professional development). You must also complete required CPC Assessment modules (typically 4 per cycle, each earning 8 Class A credits). Credits from one class cannot substitute for the other, and extras don't carry over to the next cycle.

What happens if I don't complete my CPC requirements?

Your NBCRNA certification lapses and you cannot practice as a CRNA until you remediate. Remediation can take weeks to months. At average daily CRNA rates, even a 2-week gap costs $8,000-$15,000+ in lost income, plus remediation fees and professional reputation damage.

What are the best CRNA programs?

We rank programs by NCE first-time pass rate — the most objective measure of how well a program prepares graduates for practice. Top programs include Mayo Clinic (100%), Duke (99%), US Army (100%), VCU (98%), and Rush (98%). But 'best' also depends on your priorities: tuition, location, clinical volume, and employment connections all matter.

Do I need a GRE for CRNA school?

Most top programs have dropped the GRE requirement. Of our top 25 ranked programs, none currently require the GRE. However, requirements change — always verify directly with your target programs. MCAT is required by some CAA programs.

How long is CRNA school?

Most CRNA programs are 36 months (3 years) and award a DNP or DNAP degree. Some BSN-to-DNP bridge programs may be longer. CAA programs are shorter at 24-28 months for a master's degree. The doctoral requirement for CRNAs has been in effect since 2022.

Money & Loans

How much student debt do CRNAs have?

Average total CRNA student debt is $180,000-$250,000 depending on program and whether you attended public or private. With the OBBBA eliminating Grad PLUS loans starting July 2026, new students may face funding gaps that push some borrowing to higher-rate private loans.

Should I pursue PSLF as a CRNA?

If you work at a qualifying employer (501(c)(3) hospital, VA, academic medical center, government), PSLF can save $100K+ by forgiving your remaining balance after 120 qualifying payments — tax-free. The key: you must be on an IDR plan and make payments while employed at a qualifying employer. Use our loan optimizer to compare PSLF vs refinancing for your specific numbers.

What is S-Corp for CRNAs and is it worth it?

S-Corp election allows 1099 CRNAs to split income into 'reasonable salary' (subject to FICA/SE tax) and 'distributions' (not subject to SE tax). For a CRNA grossing $300K with a $130K reasonable salary, the SE tax savings is approximately $15-25K/year. It costs ~$2-3K/yr to maintain (payroll service, tax prep). Generally worth it above $150K net income.

What retirement accounts should a 1099 CRNA use?

Solo 401(k) is the most flexible and allows the highest contributions — up to $70,000+/yr combined employee + employer. SEP IRA is simpler but caps at 25% of net earnings. Defined Benefit Plans can shelter $100-265K/yr but require an actuary. Many high-earning CRNAs stack a Solo 401(k) with a smaller DBP for maximum tax deferral.

Practice & Licensure

What is the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)?

The NLC allows nurses with a multistate license from their home state to practice in 40+ compact states without obtaining individual licenses. This is a game-changer for locum and traveling CRNAs. Note: the APRN compact is separate from the RN compact. CA, NY, MA, OR, and WA are NOT in the compact.

How long does credentialing take?

Typical credentialing at a new facility takes 60-120 days, though some facilities have fast-track programs that can complete in 30-45 days. The #1 delay is missing documents. Keep a digital folder with all 16 required documents ready to submit within 24 hours of accepting a position.

What percentage of CRNAs report burnout?

56% of CRNAs report symptoms of burnout according to recent surveys. Anesthesia providers also face among the highest substance abuse rates in healthcare due to occupational exposure to anesthetic agents and the stress of high-acuity patient care. The profession is beginning to address this honestly — peer assistance programs exist in every state.

Where can I get help if I'm struggling with substance use?

SAMHSA Helpline: 1-800-662-4357 (free, confidential, 24/7). AANA Peer Assistance: 1-800-654-5167. Every state has a confidential peer assistance program designed for impaired practitioners — these programs focus on recovery, not punishment. Re-entry to practice is possible and supported.
